Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan Make Their Best Movie Yet, A Genre-Blending Thrill Ride That Has Everything You’d Ever Want In A Movie
A huge headline, I know, but goddammit it’s so hard not gush about “Sinners.” What a fucking phenomenal movie.
I was worried about it initially, I’ll admit. Heard some early test screening reactions were rough, and I personally thought the trailers were not super great.
But this movie legitimately has everything you’d ever want. Horror, comedy, action, tragedy. And totally populated by characters that Coogler, of “Black Panther” and “Creed” fame, takes the time to introduce and flesh out before dropping them into a supernatural hell. AND, on top of all that, you could legitimately write a fucking thesis on this movie with all of the socio-political and racial themes that Coogler tackles. But you could also just kick back and watch it casually. So many “buts” that I’ve just been losing my shit about this movie for days. It’s a movie that works for the film fanatics and dissecters and the people who just like to have a good time.
Between the themes of cultural appropriation, American bulldozing of immigrant culture and a thirsting for community, incredible performances by MBJ and his surrounding cast, and some bonkers cinematography and music, “Sinners” is just bursting at the seams with creativity and vision. It’s a truly unique movie, a “Get Out” meets “Lovers Rock” meets “From Dusk Til Dawn,” and it’s still so much its own thing. God it’s good guys.
This is a short review, but only out of self control.
